Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)
Why Are Parks Important?
In any growing city, parks and open space are essential for recreation and the quality of life. The green space in Medford provides not only common space for free play, sports, concerts, swimming, and other public events, but also sanctuaries for quiet relaxation and the preservation and enjoyment of nature. Our parks and green spaces are vital to the continued growth of Medford. The benefits of parks are endless - to individuals, communities, the economy and the environment.
How do Parks and Recreation Programs Benefit Individuals and the Community?
Parks offer opportunities to enrich the quality of life for persons of all ages and abilities. Children who participate in the many programs through Medford Parks and Recreation benefit from a safe and enriching environment. Adults who participate in a variety of social and recreational opportunities benefit from the social connections and interactions that are fundamental to their well-being. Parks and recreation programs offer a multitude of opportunities to engage in arts, music and sports. A park can be a symbol of vitality and character and add to the overall quality of life within a community. Parks are more than places to recreate and relate to nature. Strong, established parks are the focal point of communities. They are places for social and cultural exchange.
Why is the Medford Parks Foundation working to acquire land when it is a challenge for the city to maintain current properties?
Maintaining public land whether it is open space, or a developed park area is always an issue in growing cities. The Parks Foundation and Parks staff are looking at creative ways to ensure that all of Medford Parks facilities are clean, safe and well-maintained. One example of this is establishing an Endowment Fund that would help defray maintenance costs for all new projects and revisiting past projects to implement maintenance endowments for these as well. These endowments will help span the gap with private dollars when there is a shortfall in city budgets. On the other side of this issue is the quickly disappearing greenspace in Medford.
